In your eyes

It's all in your eyes !
A year rolled on the calendar, a silent prayer on the lips, a not so evident tear in the eye.
The eyes that once looked through your eyes, now looks at the world like never before,as if they only realized their existence now.
And the other set of eyes with all the promise in them, have now started dreaming afresh.
Yet when my eyes look into yours, all that's left behind is a bit of sinking earth beneath.
It's all in your eyes! It's all in your eyes!

Summer of 2011

Its the last day of April, or just as i realize its May day. And for a while its been crawling on my mind how the summer has been this year.
We've had some amazing turn of events and the biggest one of them all is we've won the World cup. And thanks to that I've been spared of writing about it how the Indian team always fails to live up to the expectations. But then, thanks to our Men in Blue, from 2nd of April, 2011, they've raised the bar of expectations for themselves.

Every world cup there is a new thing that we find is being talked about. While in the previous editions it was something within the game, this world cup I'll always remember for the way I watched it. "Tweeting" !!!

I had never imagined I would be commentating live on the state of a match with a person sitting thousands of miles away. This was something we always did during the post-mortem of the match. The howling, screaming and shouting of course was very integral of the match watching experience, but emoting in 140 characters is something I'm now pretty warmed up to. This has completely changed the way I while my time with cricket now. Atleast I don't feel guilty of not doing anything during a match. Not that I can remember what it used to be like to watch 5 days of it.

Hmm, so back to the 'summer'. Though it might have appeared in a lot of my recent posts/rants/ramblings I'm still very much hung-over with it. I now own a Royal Enfield. Man I can't get over it :). I'm so thrilled about this new relationship.

And on a personal note, I've taken a real liking to running. It all started during my ten day stint at Pune. The apartment where the guest house was situated was bloody brilliant. It had so much space that running was a joy there. All the years spent in the gym sure has given me mass enough to make running a challenging endeavor. Just like how working out can be a vent to the mundaneness of life, running gives me the satisfaction. And by the way I have a marathon coming up! I'm running yet again with team EY.

I'm counting this summer to open up a lot of avenues for me and of course everyone of you.  Until then, stay sunny!!!

Human Chemistry

Dear Blog,

How have you been? I know I haven't written to you in a while. In these days word and excel documents seem to take everything out of me, and I am left high and dry even for words, let alone a few sentences.

Recently blog, I read 'Dork' by Sidin Vadukut and I am impressed by his easy-on-the-eyes style of writing and lucid storytelling. So don't be surprised if you find the style of this prose to be a little unnatural here, atleast i can imitate the style of writing :)

During last September/October, a close friend suddenly shocked us with the news that he was going to go to a completely different profession altogether. Though the news came with a certain shock value, it was a very pleasant shock and we were all really happy for him, almost all. I say almost all because each one of us construed the situation differently. Now my point of bringing this here blog, is to ponder on the fact that no matter how close a group of friends are, and for however long the duration be, it is the chemistry amongst all of them that makes the group work(group dynamics). And this is not something you'd see often, such behavior comes out in exceptional situations.

For instance a friend took it too seriously got miffed and took a little time to come to terms with the facts, his whole contention was that such a thing need not have been kept a secret from us which this friend had done. But then, I have one thing to say to both, there will be times when you should share a bit of one's life, because who better to have than a friend who even though might mock, but will hear you with utmost seriousness ultimately. And there will be times, when not much of everything can be shared, need to respect and appreciate the situation. This blog, i call sensing the sensitivity in a situation.

Guess it also just human behavior to keep something very discrete which is very close to heart. This blog, I shall not talk about since I am not too good at it and sometimes, I consider myself a hopeless romantic when it comes the matters of heart. I have a heart and mind that opens out at every given opportunity like it just did now. Our group formed, normed, performed and will continue performing forever.

We don't often acknowledge the fact, but the best of who we are is largely determined by our friends. Proud to have such company.

Trusting in Chemistry, Amen !!!

Of a few mixed thoughts

It's raining realty all across. By all the chugging along with my friend here and there for the purpose of his apartment, and all the calls I was getting at home for my uncles apartment, one thing is for sure. Man still yearns for his 'Do Bheega Zameen' be it in whatever shape. Don't know if its due to all the reality shows, lakhs seem like pennies and paisas. I don't know if i might feel the same urge to buy property in case i was working in a city which wasn't my hometown or maybe it's just the fact that we have a home. Looking at the mad rush and all the hustle bustle of life I sometimes feel, I am so lucky to be in the second category. But then, there is this lurking  feeling of 'Am i going to be left out'.

7 months ago, when i was this MBA wanting to be assume consulting positions in an MNC the word consulting had a lofty meaning. 6 months hence this feeling has not changed, but has started assuming different meanings in the professional life. As far as what i know in India consultant is one who charges 8 hours to the client while striving for 12-14 hours a day to complete work that can be done by 2 people in lesser time and doesn't even get to charge the hours spent. It is also dawning at this point in time, that MBA surely helps in one aspect. The grind helps set the platform for the real grinding we face professionally.

Another aspiration of fresh MBA grads are to be in positions of client interfacing roles. And consultants are surely at the forefront of this particular area. Yes, we do meet a lot of people everyday. So what ? A question needs to be asked here by everyone who fits in the above scenario. Am sure everyone knows the answer, and are constantly contemplating towards how best one can depict the same.
"What is different in you that makes people you meet, meet you more often than those others?"
In other news, there is a major facet of human behavior that i want to talk about, but I'll save it for the next post since I'm in a very reactionary mode for me to be rationale about it. Also, after almost close to a year I am taking a vacation which can be considered a real vacation, because essentially all those weekends out of Bangalore didn't qualify. Will write more about this too...

On that note of hoping for a wonderful vacation let me wish you all a wonderful Diwali and hope you all have a terrific time leading upto the new year. In auditing terms, the wishes shall be renewed post the new year.

~Cheers

Of cricketing highs

There are few and far instances when absolute thriller of a cricket match presents itself. There are some images that immediately come rushing to my mind.

  • Sachin Raising a sandstorm in sharjhah in the mid 90s.
  • Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble taking us to victory someday during navarathri.
  • Yuvraj And Kaif put up that magical partnership to shut Naser Hussain up in Lords.
  • And of course, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman creating the miracle at the Eden in 2001.

Today when Ishant and Laxman made a game of what seemed to be yet an other procession of sorts, the scenes around me in the usually glum seeming cafeteria were hysterical.

Thank you VVS, that indeed was Very very special.

A Hmmmm'ble capture

Very recently, captured this video in innovative film city. At the time, I became very contemplative about life, seeing the number of rounds the guys there managed to skate.

While I saw them rising everytime they fell, in life nowadays with so much we crave for, it is so important to only rise and keep rising. Because every fall means an additional step to strenghten the ground below.

But that said, its so very important to have those falls and learn from it by rising quicker and stronger.

Saying Adieu in style

In our professional lives these days, seeing people leave the organization they work for is not really a big deal. People choose to leave different trails so to say while leaving, experience definitely helps me recollect from the whole lot of mails I've received and the two I've sent in this regard.

Some leave with a mail with full of gratitude that people reading it actually feel if the exiting employee was actually in the same company as they are. While there are others who offload a truckload of hate, disgust and frustration to all the readers while they leave. And then there are others who leave as though they want nobody to know they have left.

Recently I came across a fascinating kind, who in their own way signify their presence in their absence. These are people who with their positive outlook tend to believe that moving on, is an opportunity in the truest sense and possess a great belief that the change is for good. They might be completely wrong in their decision but at the end of the day nobody can belittle the positivity they create.
Farewell said she....
I post this picture of someone's creativity with the intent of only appreciating her(as i was told) thoughtful work of art which left a deep impression on me. Like always, its only my views.

Saying no Is after all not such a bad thing

Of Jiving the marathon

Enthusiasm, anticipation and excitement in the same order is such an integral part of our life. Talk about beating the mundanity of life, and nothing can be better than surprising yourselves by doing something totally unexpected. A couple of things this year which i wouldn't have thought of doing, but for the opportunities.

Out of nowhere comes this mail at work, asking people to register for the Sunfeast World 10k Marathon, Bangalore. First few weeks at work is always when the employee gets his time, space for self, and I utilized mine to the best by registering to run for supporting EY's cause of 'I run = they learn'. It is not the idea of running that enthused me, but it was about doing something out of an opportunity when it arose.

Until one is actually part of the marathon running in it, the concept of a marathon is usually unclear. The buzz it generates across age groups is tremendous. I can still feel those additional bouts of energy I received in form of the encouragement from people of all age groups ebbing me and all others, on to complete the last stretch which seemed so beyond me.

Bangalore I think should open up for more such and other events like street concerts, street plays, other community connecting initiatives promoted from time to time when parts of the city will be temporarily closed for vehicular traffic from time to time. The feel good factor is really infectious!
So what, if it's just for a day or a half?

Secondly, another thing i have learnt off late is to never say never again. I had this strange pride in telling people that i had two left feet when it had to do something with dance. Though almost all things to be done on stage pulled me in, dance never figured in the list. But since my MBA days this has somehow become something that i have started enjoying, loving maybe. It is all with the mindset, and if you still think you are such a hopeless dancer like i was, then you better have friends like i've had, with a lot of talent & patience. I  simply can't forget the dance performance at our MBA inauguration in the summer of '08.

And this time, summing up all the courage I could from previous experiences, I enrolled to be part of the dance group without nobody coercing, cajoling or scamming me in. This was for a Jive performance for the annual Ernst & Young offsite Party at the Golden Palms Hotel and Spa as a part of the employee talent program.

Since the time of registering to the day of the event, the group had five days to practice along with the professional choreographers who were specially contracted to help us out. First couple of days passed by, with work and illness taking precedence. It seemed so very convenient to slip away from the scene, but i am a stickler for commitments and thus I headed for practice on the third day. For my long legs, the task seemed ever-more daunting on seeing   people dance like they were born with feet only to dance. But the heart always seems to find answers and be assured and then it takes over the mind and its matters.

And it helps when, you find somebody who can just look at you and say, it's ok you're doing all right if not fine. Therein lies the source of inspiration and energy that we all look for and I found mine in my colleague Pooja. From then on, there was not much to look behind/around considering that not many were part of the dance group as yet. It took us some practice sessions in the escalator lobby in office, one session in a dance studio for half an hour and finally lots of impromptu sessions by the swimming pool at the resort to finally tap our feet to the right note.Once in the zone, the task simply became insignificant and the fun aspects took over.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if could enjoy all other work tasks similarly and accomplish it? Wishful thinking!

At the end of the day it's a great feeling to be surprised to know what and how much we're capable of. All we need to do is keep pushing!!!

Complexology - The Art of identifying unanswerable questions

Lately, there has been a spate of family functions and attending it, means answering many questions. Primarily when all senior cousins in the family are married and you are next on list.

"So when is yours" they ask?

Ask any bachelor, he would tell you that this would be one of the most difficult questions he'll ever have to answer. When is it that we actually know the time, the right time. Every time this question poses itself in multifarious ways, there is a new concern and a newer sub-question to address.

As if the larger question was not enough, I was faced with another question.

"Do you know whom you are going to marry"?

The question though very straight forward, has a lot of ramifications. Come to think of it, if one knows the answer for this question, the larger question more often than not gets answered. But trouble is when you haven't found the answer for the sub-question, all the questions loom larger and larger.

Excuse me for the sheer confusion in the post, the topic is to be held responsible.

For all those people, who faced this question and successfully found an answer, I am all ears to your wisdom. And for all other crusaders who seek an answer, my best wishes are with you.

Make way for the Emergency vehicle: But how?

How many times have we all suddenly heard the hooting of an ambulance/emergency vehicle out of nowhere? And as if this incident has the influence of Murphian laws, it happens mostly during the peak hour traffic. I have noticed this consistently for the last four days in Bangalore and my first reaction has always been to make way. But then, we are in Bangalore, where footpaths are considered as an alternative option to roads anytime they are all full.

So while I want to make way, I'm helpless and so are thousands of others. At this point of time, I always end up thinking about what should be done:

  • What would be the options?
  • Whether these options are something which is commonly known to everyone on the road with or without a vehicle?
  • Can technology be used in traffic signals like in few western countries. I don't think this will be a viable option considering our traffic sense and maturity.
While I can think of many more questions, I might just miss the point. How do we MAKE WAY ???

From having personally been in the traffic of Bangalore from the past 10 or so years, I can think of these must-do's.
  1. Try to move towards left or right corner depending on where the emergency vehicle is.
  2. Try passing on the message to the drivers who are ahead in line and ask them to cascade. This is specific in cases of long traffic jams like we have in bangalore.
  3. Most often the emergency vehicles take the one-way's. So always be vigilant in such times.
  4. Finally Do whatever possible in your capacity to make way for these vehicles.
Just before i post this I also wanted to check out what people think about this on the internet. On Yahoo Answers this was the best answer to the question asked by the asker.

The law in the US is that all drivers must yield to emergency vehicles by getting out of the way and slowing or stopping in order to allow others in front or behind to follow suit.

On a regular road a driver shouldn't be an obstruction whether moving or not if they are out of the vehicle's path of travel. Oftentimes in heavy traffic, everyone can be limited by space to move to. This leaves the driver having to negotiate around vehicles in order to get through. Presumably, in heavily congested areas, if everyone moves a little over where they can and pays attention to where the path of travel is forming, they can get out of the way, but everyone following the law is required. Dolts who pay no attention to their surroundings and don't hear the siren are in my mind, the worst. They refuse to move out of the way and will block up a vehicle's only means of travel.

At an intersection or stop lights, its the same rule; get out of the way as much as possible, even if its just a few feet, or if you can, move to an area where you can, but be mindful that moving into an intersection could spell confusion once the emergency vehicle has passed and everyone begins to move again. Small moves over to the left or right are the best solution, if that's all you can do.

When everyone is paying attention and cooperates, emergency vehicles should be able to have safe egress through traffic.

Make Way Please ! And NOW !!!

Title-less

Every passing day brings with it absolute-nothings, or many times phenomenal-somethings. My mind tells me that the chances of ending up on either side of things depend majority of times upon luck. But for the other minority, it is the preparedness that matters. Fortune now favors not only the brave but also the prepared.

Until the time my rantings are over... So long !!!

Yearn for the churn

Pre-Scipt: Dear readers, I won't mind if you don't read this post!!!

Restlessness, queasiness... all these I guess are common. But all these at exam times can be really disconcerting. And where does this bring me... to metalbook. I have these swings that play with my moods and makes me do wierd things. Like listen to Floyd, post something new on my blog or just talk to people.

Talking about exams, well I'm in all probability give my last exams of a full time student life. And there can't be an exam day that i let go by, without thinking, of one blunder i committed during my third semester. Fortunately for me it was mid-sem exams. This picture is in memory of the same.

Looking at this my mind has suddenly started travelling back to days when this tool was put to its real use. All those days, when moments were  created by a simple Reply-All, or a bloody forward that blocked someone's whole mailbox. I yearn to get back to those days again.

While my heart can continue rumbling away, my mind says "shut up, I'm not going to let you *&^% up my blog with these lame rantings." Don't know what it is? It must be the damned subject, or wait, it might be the mail again. Whatever it is, I can now move on.. for the horrible feeling which i had, when I began seems to have gone.

P.S: If you have still stuck on reading to this after my initial intimation, Thanks you are a good listener and your time has helped me !!!

What was the hurry for 2010 ???

I wish all my readers a wonderful and a rewarding 2010 !!!

Can't help but think that this is now the time when my blog will invariably contain a lot of content about testimonials and memories. How I wish this was a disclaimer, that i could pretend having read and not bother about it from the next second. There are atleast a dozen things that keep reminding me of the reality every single day. If you are not one of the library type person, then MBA time means a lot of time online.

I was amazed how effective a tool an internal messenger(IM) can prove to be, more so when I could not use it. And nowadays for me online invariably means GTALK if not YM, and this also means status messages that keep changing like hand-towels on a hot summer day in Mumbai.

  • Countdowns on status lines like "30 days remaining.... ", "Recreate that magic" and some like "..........................." sure do keep reminding me of the time that's slipping away.
Signals are ubiquitous, sometimes glaring.

  • The anticipation that every mail brings from a certain department in college.
  • Memories evoked by that small meeting with an old colleague.
  • A friend who has moved on to bigger and better things, and is waiting for you there.
  • Individual photographs that once looked beautiful as is, now seem incomplete. Make a collage and see the difference it brings to the outlook.
  • The awe that every corrected answer paper or assignments bring, or sometimes the pun that is intended with it.
  • That new friend you wished to have known a little earlier.

Are we to do something about them? Can we? I say, Move on, but don't lose your chance to reflect.

Stay cheerful.

Few Lessons un-learnt to learn a few more

How would it feel if you were dressed for some impending meetings and presentations for the  day and you were apprehensive about how presentable you look?

A week ago I was in a similar situation and right at that moment a senior gentleman walked by and asked, "Which organization do you represent"?

And when I answered "IBS-Bangalore", he said "Very Smart" looking at our outfits!!!

That was all necessary for the confidence meter to shoot up and without a doubt, the rest of our day went very well. Subsequently, I was thinking about this incident and realized that everyday we see so many of our friends and feel "wow! do they look at their best or what"?

But then, do we really take that second off to say "Mate you look good today"?  Personally speaking, I have come to know that there is never a wrong time to say it and not a whole bunch of us do so.

What stops us from doing so?

Is it the high context culture that we grow up on? By high context culture I mean to say, that we don't actually have to say things, to let people around us know that we mean it.

In case of the Westerners it is the low context culture they have got accustomed that enables them to extravagantly display their emotions.

Take the new generation kids in urban India for instance. You would actually see them shouting out to their parents how much they love them and exchanging pleasantries. From my point of view I think this would have been something I would struggle to do easily. Not because I don't, but because nobody expects me to.

I was attending this lecture from my marketing professor who handles the subject of international marketing. It was attendance time by the end of the class and i was still struggling to come to grips with some of the concepts he taught that day and started discussing with friends while the attendance was on. All he did was to call out Sanjay and stare at me. Seeing me fall silent he said, now this is what is "High Context Culture" and I'd learnt my lessons for the day.

But thinking about the world we live in now, and as a truly global professional it pays to understand culture both from a high and low context perspective. Like my professor's say we have to unlearn a lot to learn newer things.

By the way I'm glad this post has taken away the burden of learning one chapter from my to-study list for the impending exams.

Till the next time.... Stay safe!!!

Do-this-what, you might ask me. For the first time in MBA I am finding this break a bit too much to make real good use of.

Coming to think about what I've done with semester breaks until now, it always comprises of a customary trip with my closest group of friends and on returning sleep a lot, watch movies, read books, retrospect and worry/plan about the upcoming semester.

When it comes to movies, books, sleep and the trip too(upcoming weekend) It has been no different this time. But somehow the upcoming semester has a had a way with the structure of my thoughts. I've been spending lot of time on social networking websites with more than just the usual intention. Good or bad, i don't know.

Anyways over the last two days, I read Aravind Adiga's much acclaimed 'The White tiger' and watched Quentin Tarantino's 'The Inglorious Basterds'.  I would usually move on with more books that I've stacked up in my shelf. But I have made a pact with myself of trying to be more regular on my blog and hence this time I decided to maybe review them both.

Statutory warning : I have little experience in what i'm attempting in the upcoming posts, so please do feel free to be critical of my work.

Will be back...

The latest 3R's in Metalbook

My blog is soon going to complete 4 years and I've been reflecting on what I have been resonating all this while. If the blog were to be my kid, then surely i'd be termed as a bad parent, for I've hardly tried to post frequently, nor have i given it frequent makeovers. Thus after being lazy enough for long, I thought it's time to do something different with my blog outcome of which is the new template for all you all to see.

This is my first step in rejuvenating, what I consider to be surely a great platform to share my thoughts with the world at large. Change is the only constant, and my blog needed one badly too. So ensuing the unusually hectic semester(3rd) that this was, i found this the best time for the same.

Some portions of the blog are still under development, and will be so for a little more considering, my coding skills have are at a all time low. But the efforts are on...

I shall limit this post only to my new blog avtaar. Do let me know how you like it?

Happy Dussehra to one and all,

Cheers,
Sanjay

Absolute Musings

Apart from the usual chaos surrounded with classes and my preparation for it, things happening around have been of utmost importance in terms of what I want to call, as 'life skills'.

Woah, have I got back to preaching mode? I hope not!!!

It's something that we notice day in and day out but turn a deaf ear towards the craving voices of relationships. With relations it is not that an individual will be satisfied when his/her individual cravings are answered for, infact it is much to do with the intent of being empathetic towards the needs of all parties involved. We tend to take the easiest, non-committal approach which helps us in assuming a status quo position without taking a stance towards a particular situation.

With every passing day I’ve been learning the practical approach of applying these life skills where relationships are on the tip of the iceberg. Trying to ripen relations is like premature dislodging of the iceberg, which invariably causes damage to the ice. It all works best, when there is a natural meltdown I guess.

Seems like I can’t get any better at being abstract.

May 20, 2009

Of late I have been experiencing a mix of routinized, intensive, pensive, tense, light and stressful times.  My posts of late have all been about what to write rather than what not to, with thoughts that seem to have got struck in the cellar of my mind. I think i'll just list few thoughts on top of my head:
  • Whatever happened to my friends, everyone seems to be slimming down, making me look as if i'm growing fatter?
  • Why does that sick nail on the road always show its pointed side to the wheels of my bike? And to the back wheel most often.
  • Why does the traffic cop find something missing everytime, that he can charge me for?
  • Why are the results always delayed at a crucial time?
  • Why does that stupid pimple always leave behind a blemish?
  • Why have I lined up so many books, waiting to be read?
  • How many more weddings will i have to attend, wishing 'how the heck can it possible without me'?
  • Why does being a hopeless romantic feel so hopeless?
  • For how many days/months/years can i go so dry ?
  • When will i ever do something that I feel really happy about self?
I can go on and on and on with framing questions, but how would that help but for filling up this boring post. It's time to churn some soul for the much needed answers.

Till then,
~Sanj
